Hinglish captions for reels: Roman or Devanagari, and how to make them readable

Most Indian creators speak Hinglish on camera, but caption tools were built for English or pure Hindi. The script you choose and how you break the lines decide whether people read your captions or scroll past. Here's what works, and how to get it done inside the edit.

Short answer

For Hinglish reels, use Roman-script captions ("Yeh trick sabko nahi pata"), because that's how your audience writes Hinglish and English words stay readable. Show 2–4 words at a time, highlight one keyword per line, and keep spelling consistent. Use Devanagari only for pure Hindi content and audiences who read Hindi fluently.

Why do captions matter so much on Hinglish reels?

Many reels are watched with the sound off or low, on the metro, in the office, late at night. Captions are what make the first two seconds land. For Hinglish content there's a second job: viewers switch between Hindi and English mid-sentence, and the captions have to follow that switch without making anyone stop and decode.

Roman or Devanagari: which script should you use?

Both are right, for different reels.

Roman Hinglish Devanagari
Looks like Yeh mistake mat karna यह गलती मत करना
Best for Hinglish speech, urban and young audiences, mixed Hindi-English Pure Hindi speech, Hindi-reading audiences, news, devotional, many regional pages
English words Stay as they are (reel, budget, client) Transliterated (रील, बजट) or mixed scripts
Matches How people type in comments and DMs How Hindi is printed and taught
Watch out for Inconsistent spelling (hai / hain / he) Hard to read in small, fast captions

A simple test: read your comments. If your audience comments in Roman Hinglish, caption in Roman Hinglish. If they comment in Devanagari, caption in Devanagari.

Many tools that support "Hindi" output Devanagari only, or translate into English. That's fine for some pages and wrong for most Hinglish creators.

How do you make Hinglish captions readable?

Six rules that hold for almost every reel:

  1. 2–4 words per line. Match the rhythm of speech. One idea per screen.
  2. One keyword highlighted per line. A colour or weight change on the word that carries the meaning: "Yeh mistake mat karna".
  3. Big enough for a phone in one hand. If you squint on your own phone, it's too small.
  4. Inside the safe area. Keep captions above the bottom UI (username, caption, buttons) and away from the right-side icons.
  5. Consistent spelling. Pick hai, nahi, kya, bahut and stick to them across the reel and your page.
  6. Names and terms checked. Brand names, place names, doctors' names, property project names and prices are where auto-captions slip.

What do Hinglish captions look like in practice?

Here's the same line captioned three ways:

Approach On screen Problem
Full sentence, Devanagari यह गलती ज्यादातर लोग अपनी पहली रील में करते हैं Too long to read in time; English-speaking viewers lost
Translated to English Most people make this mistake in their first reel Doesn't match what you're saying
Roman Hinglish, chunked Yeh galti / zyada log / apni pehli reel / mein karte hain Readable, matches the speech

Are caption apps enough?

If you've already edited the reel and only need captions, a caption app is the cheapest route. Indian caption apps sell caption minutes for ₹49 to ₹999 (packs and monthly plans, checked October 2026), and some handle Hinglish well.

But captions are usually the smallest part of the job. Before captions, someone has to:

  • pick the best take and cut the pauses, retakes and "umm"s,
  • build the hook in the first second or two,
  • add b-roll, zooms, price counters or title cards,
  • and keep the whole thing in your brand's fonts and colours.

That's the edit, and that's what Instant Studio does.

How does Instant Studio handle Hinglish?

Instant Studio is a complete video editing system that runs on your own Windows PC or Mac and your own Claude plan. Hinglish captions are one part of a finished edit:

  1. Drop in your raw footage. Claude transcribes every word, in Hindi, English and 90+ other languages, and finds the pauses, retakes and filler.
  2. Describe the edit. "40-second reel, hook in two seconds, Hinglish captions, highlight the price." Point at a reel whose captions you like if you want that look.
  3. Get the finished reel. Captions come out in Roman-script Hinglish, timed to your speech, in your design system's caption style with keyword highlights, alongside the cuts, b-roll and graphics.
  4. Give notes. "Spell it nahi, not nahin." "Two words per line." It re-renders, and approved preferences are saved for the next reel.

It renders 9:16 for reels and 16:9 for YouTube from the same edit.

What do you need?

  • Instant Studio: ₹2,999 a month (cancel anytime), no credits, updates included while you're subscribed.
  • A paid Claude plan with Claude Code, billed by Anthropic. Pro is enough to start.
  • Windows 10/11 or macOS with 8 GB RAM or more and about 5 GB free.

If your reels are already edited and you only want captions, use a caption app. If you shoot raw Hinglish footage every week and want it turned into finished reels, that's the job Instant Studio was built for.

Questions people ask

Should Hinglish captions be in Roman or Devanagari?

For Hinglish, mostly Roman script, because that's how your audience types Hinglish in comments and chats, and English words stay readable. Use Devanagari for pure Hindi content and audiences who read Hindi fluently, such as many news, devotional and Hindi-belt regional pages.

How many words should a reel caption show at once?

Two to four words per line works best on reels. Short chunks match the speech rhythm, stay inside the safe area, and can be read in the time each phrase is on screen.

Can AI write Hinglish captions?

Yes. Instant Studio transcribes Hindi and 90+ other languages and writes Hinglish captions in Roman script, timed to your speech, as part of the finished reel in your brand's caption style.

Are there cheaper Hinglish caption apps?

Yes. Indian caption apps sell caption minutes for as little as ₹49 to ₹999. If all you need is captions on a reel you've already edited, they're good value. Instant Studio is for when you want the whole reel edited, with captions as one part.

Why do Hinglish captions go wrong?

Usually because the tool outputs pure Hindi in Devanagari, translates into English, or spells Hindi words inconsistently. Check spelling of names and key terms, and keep one spelling for words like hai, kya and nahi across the reel.
