Video editing services in India: what you get at each price
A ₹500 reel and a ₹50,000 retainer are both called a video editing service. Here's what actually changes between them, what's usually not included, and how to choose without overpaying.
Short answer
Video editing services in India range from about ₹300 an hour for a marketplace freelancer to ₹1,50,000 a month for an agency retainer. What you pay for is judgement, speed and revisions, not the software. Fix the scope, revision count, turnaround, music licensing and GST in writing before you compare quotes.
Why quotes for "video editing" vary so much
Two quotes for "one reel" can differ by ten times because they describe different jobs. A ₹500 quote usually means cuts and basic captions on footage you've already organised. A ₹5,000 quote often includes choosing the best takes, writing the hook, pacing, motion graphics and sound design.
So before asking "how much?", decide what you're buying:
- Cuts only: remove pauses and mistakes, join clips, add basic captions.
- Retention edit: hook first, tight pacing, zooms, keyword captions, sound effects.
- Motion graphics: animated titles, callouts, lower thirds, branded templates.
- Concept to post: the editor (or agency) also plans the idea, script and caption.
The four tiers of video editing services
| Tier | Typical price (India, 2026) | What you usually get | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marketplace freelancer (IndiaMART, Fiverr, freelancer.in) | ₹300–₹600 an hour, or ₹300–₹1,000 per basic reel | Cuts and captions, fast turnaround, little creative input | Simple, repeatable edits with a clear brief |
| Experienced freelancer | ₹600–₹2,000 an hour, or ₹2,000–₹5,500 per reel | Retention edits, some motion graphics, a consistent style | Creators and brands posting 2–4 reels a week |
| Studio or production agency | ₹10,000–₹50,000+ per project; ₹1,500–₹3,000 an hour | Shooting plus editing, colour, sound, graphics, a team | Ads, brand films, launches |
| Monthly retainer | ₹8,000–₹25,000 a month for 4–8 reels; ₹25,000–₹1,50,000 for agency packages | A fixed number of edits every month, a point of contact | Brands that want a predictable pipeline |

These are vendor-published ranges, not market surveys. Use them to sanity-check quotes, not as a price list.
City matters too. Metro editors usually quote more than editors in smaller cities, but remote work has narrowed the gap. If you're comparing locally, see what we found for Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru.
What's usually included, and what isn't
Most disputes with an editing service come from things nobody wrote down. Check each of these before you pay an advance.
| Item | What's common | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Revisions | About 2 rounds included; extra rounds ₹500–₹2,000 each (agency blog figure) | "How many rounds, and what counts as one round?" |
| Turnaround | 3–5 working days for short edits; rush jobs 20–50% more | "What's the delivery date, and what happens in festival season?" |
| Raw footage handling | Many editors expect footage sorted and named | "Will you pick the best takes, or do I mark them?" |
| Captions | Usually included; Hindi or regional captions may cost extra | "Hinglish in Roman script, Devanagari, or both?" |
| Music and stock | Licensed tracks and stock clips are often billed on top, sometimes with a 10–15% handling fee | "Is the music licensed for commercial use on my brand's page?" |
| Project files | Often not handed over unless agreed | "Do I get the project file, or only the MP4?" |
| GST | Registered businesses bill 18% on top | "Is your quote inclusive or exclusive of GST?" |
Revision, rush and pass-through figures are from the same Pune agency blog. On GST, 18% is the standard rate a registered editor will add to an invoice; smaller freelancers below the registration threshold may not charge it at all. Confirm anything tax-related with your CA.
Music deserves a special mention. A trending song that works in the Instagram app is not automatically licensed for a brand's reel or an ad. If your editor adds music, ask where it's licensed from.
How to brief a video editing service
A good brief saves more money than any discount. Send these five things with your footage:
- The goal. "Get enquiries for our new 2BHK project", not "make a nice reel".
- The length and format. 30 seconds, 9:16, for Instagram and YouTube Shorts.
- One or two reference reels. The pacing, caption style and hook you want. This is the fastest way to explain taste.
- Your brand rules. Fonts, colours, logo, words you never use.
- What must be in it. The price, the address, the offer, the RERA number, the CTA.
Then judge the first draft against the brief, not against your mood. Notes like "the hook comes too late, start on the balcony shot" get fixed in one round. Notes like "make it more premium" take three.
How to evaluate a service before you hire
- Ask for work in your category. A wedding editor and a real-estate reel editor need different instincts.
- Do a paid test edit. One reel at their normal rate tells you more than a portfolio.
- Check the rhythm, not just the effects. Good editors cut on the speaker's energy and remove every dead second.
- Ask about capacity. How many clients do they have, and what happens when two of them have a launch in the same week?
- Get the terms in a message. Price, revisions, turnaround, music, GST, file handover.
Red flags
- A price far below the ranges above for "unlimited revisions" and "VFX". Something gives, usually turnaround or quality.
- No question about your goal or audience before quoting.
- Trending audio added to brand content without a word about licensing.
- Payment fully in advance for a long retainer, with no test edit.
- Your reels start looking like the editor's other clients' reels.
Where an editing system you own fits
A service is the right call when you need ideas, a team or heavy VFX. But many brands and creators don't need ideas every week. They need the same kind of reel, in the same style, edited from new footage, fast.
That's what Instant Studio does. You add raw clips and a brief, point it at a reference reel, and it delivers the finished video: cuts, captions (including Hindi and Hinglish), hook titles, b-roll and motion graphics, in your saved brand style. Notes are plain English, and re-renders take minutes on your own Windows PC or Mac. It costs ₹2,999 a month (cancel anytime), plus a paid Claude plan with Claude Code (Pro is enough to start), billed by Anthropic. It edits footage you shoot; it doesn't generate stock or AI footage.
It won't plan your campaign or shoot your video. A sensible split for many brands: keep a service or agency for the one hero video a month, and edit the weekly reels in-house. The full comparison is in Instant Studio vs hiring a video editor, and you can put your own numbers into the reel editing cost calculator.
If you run an agency yourself, the same logic applies to your clients' reels. See Instant Studio for agencies.
Questions people ask
How much do video editing services cost in India?
It depends on who edits. Rate guides and listings published in 2026 put freelancers at roughly ₹300–₹2,000 an hour or ₹800–₹8,000 per reel, and agency retainers at about ₹25,000–₹1,50,000 a month. Always compare quotes for the same scope, since cuts-only and motion-graphics work are priced very differently.
Is GST charged on video editing services?
If the editor or agency is GST-registered, editing services are generally billed with 18% GST. Smaller freelancers below the registration threshold often don't charge it. Ask whether a quote is inclusive or exclusive of GST, and check the details with your CA.
How many revisions are included in a video editing package?
Most packages include about two rounds of revisions. Extra rounds are commonly charged separately, with one Indian agency blog quoting ₹500–₹2,000 per additional round. Put the revision count in writing before work starts.
How long does a video editing service take?
Short edits usually take 3–5 working days on a standard timeline, and rush delivery commonly costs 20–50% more. Expect longer queues during festival and wedding seasons, when every editor is booked.
Should I hire a video editing service or edit in-house?
Hire a service for big creative concepts, heavy VFX or when you have no time to brief. If you shoot your own videos every week and know the style you want, running your own editing system for ₹2,999 a month usually costs less than a monthly package.
