How much does it cost to hire a video editor in India? (2026 rates)
From ₹250 an hour to ₹1,50,000 a month: what Indian editors charge for YouTube videos, reels, podcasts, weddings and corporate films, which pricing model fits you, and what each option really costs over a year.
Short answer
In India in 2026, a freelance video editor typically costs ₹250–₹1,500 an hour, ₹2,000–₹8,000 for a 10-minute YouTube video, ₹5,000–₹12,000 for a podcast episode and ₹10,000–₹30,000 for a corporate film. Monthly retainers run about ₹12,000–₹1,50,000. A salaried editor averages roughly ₹18,000–₹35,000 a month. These are ranges from Indian rate guides, not quotes.
Editing prices in India look chaotic because people quote in four different units: per hour, per minute of finished video, per video and per month. This guide puts them side by side. If you only need Instagram reels, our reel editing cost guide goes deeper on per-reel prices and has a calculator.
A note on sources: nobody publishes an independent survey of Indian editing rates. The numbers below come from rate guides written by Indian editing businesses and salary sites, each linked and dated. Use them to sanity-check quotes, not as fixed prices.
How do video editors in India charge?
There are four common pricing models. Each one suits a different kind of work.
| Model | Typical India range (2026) | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Per hour | ₹250–₹4,000+ an hour | Messy, open-ended projects | Hours you can't check |
| Per minute of finished video | ₹500–₹1,500 a minute (standard), ₹3,000–₹5,000 (cinematic or animated) | Long-form YouTube and corporate | Short videos priced as if they were long |
| Per video / per project | ₹300 for a basic short to ₹75,000+ for a brand ad | One-off videos with a clear brief | Revisions billed on top |
| Monthly retainer | ₹12,000–₹1,50,000+ a month | Regular publishing (weekly YouTube, daily reels) | Unused capacity, lock-in |
Sources: hourly, per-minute, per-video and retainer ranges from hunarbox.in (22 Oct 2026); agency hourly rates of ₹1,500–₹3,000 from IRPR's Pune pricing guide (8 Jul 2026).
Hourly rates by experience
hunarbox.in (22 Oct 2026) breaks hourly rates down like this:
- Beginner (0–2 years): ₹250–₹600 an hour
- Mid-level (3–5 years): ₹700–₹1,500 an hour
- Specialist (motion graphics, VFX): ₹1,800–₹4,000+ an hour
An Indian agency with a big portfolio quotes ₹1,500–₹3,000 an hour, according to IRPR (Jul 2026). That's an agency's own guide, so it's an upper benchmark.
How much does editing cost for each type of video?
The format changes the price more than anything else. Here's what Indian rate guides list for each one.
| Video type | Typical price (India, 2026) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram reel / YouTube Short, basic | ₹300–₹1,000 per video | hunarbox.in |
| Reel / Short, advanced (hook, pacing, motion text) | ₹1,500–₹5,000 per video | hunarbox.in |
| YouTube vlog or talking head, ~10 min | ₹2,000–₹6,000 per video | hunarbox.in |
| YouTube explainer with charts or stock footage | ₹4,000–₹10,000 per video | hunarbox.in |
| Video podcast episode (multi-cam, audio clean-up) | ₹5,000–₹12,000 per episode | hunarbox.in |
| Real estate walkthrough | ₹10,000–₹30,000 per video | hunarbox.in |
| Corporate or explainer film | ₹8,000–₹30,000 per project | hunarbox.in |
| Wedding film, basic to premium | ₹5,000–₹15,000 basic; ₹50,000–₹2,00,000+ premium | fueler.io |
| Product or brand ad | ₹15,000–₹75,000+ per video | hunarbox.in |

A few things push any of these numbers up:
- Footage volume. Two hours of raw podcast footage for a 40-minute episode takes far longer than a tidy 12-minute shoot.
- Thinking, not just cutting. A "retention edit", where the editor chooses the hook, reorders the story and adds zooms and sound design, costs several times a straight cut.
- Turnaround. Rush jobs usually carry a 20–50% premium.
- Revisions. Extra rounds cost about ₹500–₹2,000 each, per hunarbox.in and IRPR.
- GST. A GST-registered freelancer or agency adds 18%.
What does a monthly editing retainer cost?
If you publish every week, you'll almost certainly end up on a retainer. hunarbox.in (22 Oct 2026) lists:
- Starter: ₹12,000–₹25,000 a month for 10–12 reels or 4 YouTube videos
- Professional: ₹30,000–₹70,000 a month for daily reels or high-volume editing
- Agency retainer: ₹60,000–₹1,50,000+ a month
Fueler puts a YouTube long-form retainer at ₹15,000–₹40,000 per channel per month, and ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 for large channels.
Over a year, a mid-range ₹30,000-a-month retainer is ₹3,60,000, before GST.
What does a full-time, in-house video editor cost?
Hiring someone on salary makes sense once you have more work than a retainer covers. Reported 2026 figures vary widely:
| Source | Reported figure |
|---|---|
| Indeed (May 2026, via search results) | Average about ₹18,700 a month |
| Glassdoor (as reported by Fueler) | Base pay about ₹18,000–₹35,000 a month |
| hunarbox.in (Oct 2026) | ₹25,000–₹45,000 junior to mid-level; ₹60,000–₹1,20,000+ senior |
Senior editors in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Noida earn well above the average. The salary is only part of the cost. You also pay for a capable computer, software licences, storage, leave cover and someone's time to brief and review the work. A ₹30,000 salary comes to ₹3,60,000 a year before any of that.
Freelancer, agency, in-house or an editing system: which costs less?
The cheapest option depends on how much you publish and how much creative thinking you need from the editor.
| Option | Typical cost | Good for | Not good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | ₹300–₹10,000 per video, or ₹12,000–₹70,000 a month | Regular content with a clear style | Crunch weeks, when they're booked |
| Agency | ₹60,000–₹1,50,000+ a month | Campaigns, ads, big concepts | Small budgets |
| In-house editor | ₹18,000–₹1,20,000+ a month, plus kit | Daily volume, many formats | Small or irregular output |
| Editing system you run yourself | A monthly software fee + your time | Weekly reels and talking-head content you shoot yourself | VFX, films, ideas you can't describe |
The fourth row is the newest option. Instant Studio is a complete editing system that runs on your own Windows PC or Mac. You add raw clips and a brief or a reference reel, and it delivers the finished video: cuts, captions (Hindi and Hinglish too), hook titles, b-roll and motion graphics, in your brand's style. It costs ₹2,999 a month (cancel anytime), plus a paid Claude plan with Claude Code (Pro is enough to start), billed by Anthropic. It edits only the footage you shoot. It won't conceive a film or do heavy VFX for you, so for that you still want a human editor.
If you're weighing a freelancer against doing it yourself, our side-by-side comparison goes through turnaround, revisions and style. If you're hiring locally, the city pages for Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru cover what businesses there need.
How to get a fair quote
- Send real footage, not a description. Share 2–3 minutes of actual raw clips. Editors price on footage volume and quality.
- Share one reference video. "Edit it like this" removes most of the guesswork and most of the revisions.
- Ask what counts as a revision. One round of notes or unlimited small fixes? Who pays for a re-cut?
- Ask about turnaround in festival season. Diwali and wedding season push every editor's queue back.
- Compare per-year totals, not per-video prices. ₹1,500 a reel at three reels a week is ₹18,000 a month, or about ₹2,16,000 a year.
- Check GST and the invoice. Registered vendors add 18%, which you may be able to claim back as input credit.
Agencies and freelancers who edit for several clients face the same maths from the other side. Instant Studio for agencies explains how one editor can deliver more brands without adding headcount.
Questions people ask
How much does a video editor charge per hour in India?
A rate guide published by hunarbox.in in October 2026 puts beginners at about ₹250–₹600 an hour, mid-level editors at ₹700–₹1,500 and motion-graphics or VFX specialists at ₹1,800–₹4,000 or more. Agencies charge more because the price includes a producer and revisions.
How much does it cost to edit a 10-minute YouTube video in India?
Indian rate guides from 2026 put a 10-minute vlog or talking-head edit at roughly ₹2,000–₹8,000 per video. Videos with charts, stock footage or animation run ₹4,000–₹10,000 or more. Most channels end up on a monthly retainer instead.
What is the salary of a full-time video editor in India?
Job-site averages reported in 2026 cluster around ₹18,000–₹35,000 a month for salaried editors. Senior editors in big cities earn far more, and an in-house hire also costs you a computer, software and management time.
Is it cheaper to hire a freelancer or an agency?
A freelancer is usually cheaper per video. An agency costs more but brings a team, deadlines and backup when one editor is unavailable. For weekly social content, many brands use a freelancer or an editing system and keep agencies for campaigns.
What extra costs should I budget for?
Extra revision rounds (about ₹500–₹2,000 each per 2026 Indian rate guides), rush delivery (often 20–50% more), 18% GST on registered vendors, music licences, and your own time briefing and reviewing.
