Claude video editor: how to edit videos with Claude Code

Why can't Claude edit a video in the chat window?

In claude.ai, Claude works with text, images and files you attach, and writes answers back. Editing a video needs something else: reading hours of footage, running a cutter on real files, and rendering a new MP4. Those are jobs for programs on a computer, not for a chat reply.

Claude Code changes that. It's Anthropic's agent that runs in your terminal, on your machine. It can read files in a folder, run commands and write new files, with your permission. Give it the right editing tools and clear instructions, and it can do what an editor does at a desk.

How does Claude actually edit footage?

Under the hood, a Claude video edit is a chain of ordinary tools that Claude drives:

2. Decide	Claude	Claude reads the transcript, finds pauses, retakes and filler, picks the best takes and writes the edit plan.
3. Cut	FFmpeg	The kept ranges are joined into one clean cut of your footage.
4. Design	Remotion	Captions, hook titles, b-roll, lower thirds and motion graphics are rendered on top, frame-accurate.
5. Revise	Claude	You give notes in plain English and Claude changes the plan and re-renders.

The important part is step 2. Claude isn't applying a filter; it makes editing decisions the way a person would, from what's actually said in the footage and what you asked for.

What can a Claude video editor make?

With a good setup, the same pipeline handles most short-form work:

• Talking-head reels with hooks, keyword-highlighted captions and the dead air removed.
• Podcast clips with a two-camera split and a hook bar.
• Unboxings cut to the beat, with a label for every item.
• Vlogs with title cards and timestamps.
• Montages built from dozens of short clips.
• Both formats from one edit: 9:16 for reels and Shorts, 16:9 for YouTube.

Claude edits the footage you shoot. It isn't a stock-footage or AI-video generator, which is why the result looks like your brand and not like a template.

Can I set this up myself?

You can. Everything above is available to anyone, and some developers on GitHub and Reddit have shared their own experiments. Building it yourself means:

1. Installing Claude Code, Node.js, Python, FFmpeg, faster-whisper and Remotion, and keeping them working together.
2. Writing the instructions (Claude Code "skills") that tell Claude how you edit: caption style, pacing rules, how to handle retakes.
3. Building the caption and graphics components in Remotion.
4. Creating a way to see drafts, give notes and keep projects organised.

Which Claude plan do you need?

You need a paid Claude plan that includes Claude Code. Pro is enough to start. Editing uses your plan's usage like any other Claude Code work, so if you edit a lot in one day you can hit your usage limit; a higher plan gives you more room. Your Claude plan is billed by Anthropic, separately from Instant Studio.
